It is both difficult and easy, with an element beyond our control.
It is both extremely fragile and durable.
Like ‘Sumi’ ink painting, it does not lend itself to erasures and indecision.

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY AFTERNOOON POTTERY CLASSES

are designed for hand-building and wheel students of all experience levels. Learn imaginative hand building techniques and how to throw on the potter’s wheel. Or, challenge your existing skills and consider how to combine the two approaches to clay. Work may be functional or nonfunctional. Explore the unique properties of clay, the aesthetics of form, lids, spouts, decorating techniques, glaze application, glaze mixing, and the loading and firing of kilns. Bring an apron and change of shoes. Notebook is provided to first-time BAC pottery students. CLAY BIRDHOUSE OR FAIRY HOUSE

INSTRUCTOR, CATHY TAPIA, M. Ed.
Adults and Teens (LIMIT 10 STUDENTS)
2 Saturdays June 17 and July 1 (NO EXTRA STUDIO TIME)
10 to 11:30 a.m. REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY JUNE 15
$25 member $34 nonmember. All materials provided.
Make a birdhouse or fairy house with clay. Decorate clay slabs with textures and stamps and build it around a form. Come back the second class to paint your house with our glazes. Students will be called back to pickup their project after it is fired in our kilns. The houses can be used outdoors in summer gardens!

 

SUPERVISED EXTRA CLAY STUDIO TIME:

Current SEMESTER LONG Clay Class Members ONLY

Adults and Teens (Limit 8 students/date) No sign-up required.

Students may attend any combinations of dates up to 8 visits.

NO COST for 8 three hour passes (total 24 hours). Clay must be purchased as needed for $25/25#.

Facilitators: BAC Clay Staff

 

The clay studio will be open for extra time only to students who regularly attend class. It will be supervised by facilitators who are not there to instruct but to answer questions about studio policies and proper use of equipment and materials. Students will work independently and should responsibly observe all studio policies posted in the studio and provided to each student. Students are not to use the studio at any other time except to attend class, briefly check on or pick up work. Each registered student will receive 8 non-transferable passes that must be signed, dated and turned into the facilitator at each visit regardless of whether they stay the entire time or not. Any abuse of this privilege will result in its cancellation.

CERAMIC LEAF PLATES

Thursday August 10 REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY AUGUST 8
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (NO EXTRA STUDIO TIME)
$18 member $25 nonmember. Bring leaves. All clay materials provided
Make three beautiful plates with leaf designs using clay and colored slips.
You may bring small leaves from your garden or yard. The leaves will be pressed into the clay to make the design. Fresh leaves of less than 5 inches with prominent veins that can be pressed flat work best. All plates will be glazed green by the instructor. They will be safe for food, microwave and the dishwasher.
You will be called when your plates are ready to be picked up.

A SHORT RAKU WORKSHOP

Instructors: Nana Maher, BFA in Ceramics and  Marie Remington, MFA in Ceramics
Adults and Teens (LIMIT 10 STUDENTS)
2 Saturdays: July 8 (10 a.m.-Noon) and July 22 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.)
(NO EXTRA STUDIO TIME)
$50 member, $67 nonmember. All materials provided.
The first day of class students will be guided in how to hand build in a playful, spontaneous way that can result in whimsical free form vessels and sculptures. Since Raku glazes are not food safe and the finished product is not watterproof, form doesn’t have to follow function and your imagination is your only limit. No experience is required. Glazes will be applied and dried on the sec-
ond class. In the afternoon students will then help send their pieces through the fire and smoke that creates the exciting effects unique to Raku. Everything should be fired and ready to take home by approximately 3 p.m.

EXTENDED POTTERY SESSIONS
